Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi confirmed that the group has scheduled a meeting with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to push the registration forward, maintaining the name has already been reserved.

Senator Osotsi emphasized that the movement belongs to them, adding that a team of experts is currently drafting the new party’s blueprint and manifesto ahead of a planned 47-county popularization tour.

However, the registration faces potential legal hurdles. The Registrar of Political Parties, John Cox Lorionokou, recently rejected a prior attempt by another applicant to reserve "Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya," citing Section 8 of the Political Parties Act due to its close resemblance to existing slogans like Linda Mkenya and Boresha Kenya .

Anticipating potential state roadblocks or legal challenges, the faction—which recently met with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka—has prepared alternate backup names.

Declaring ODM "dead," Senator Onyonka stressed the necessity of having alternative plans in Kenya's political landscape to ensure Sifuna has a viable vehicle for the upcoming 2027 general election.

The opposition leaders have quietly shifted strategy in their campaign against President William Ruto , abandoning the joint rallies that once projected unity. Instead, the team now appears to favour parallel rallies aimed at consolidating their individual political bases ahead of the election.

The new approach marks a departure from the joint appearances that characterised the early days of the opposition alliance, during which leaders regularly shared platforms to rally supporters against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The strategy also came at a time when DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua warned that every opposition leader must go out to look for votes and not wait for boardroom endorsement.

Political commentator Gitile Naituli said the individual campaigns are more of a strategy and have nothing to do with tension within the united opposition.

The Luhya Elders Forum has thrown its weight behind Linda Wananchi Movement leader Edwin Sifuna, naming him the opposition's preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election and urging other opposition formations to consolidate around him.

The forum made the announcement during a press briefing held on Sunday, 2 August 2026, calling on opposition leaders across the country to unite under a single flag bearer rather than enter the next election divided.

Forum Deputy Chairperson Noah Wekesa framed the endorsement as a natural extension of the community's pride in one of their own, while also pointing to Sifuna's growing reach beyond the Luhya region.
