Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has publicly challenged Mount Kenya residents to throw their weight behind Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, accusing the region of inconsistency in supporting its own political leaders.

Source: Facebook Murkomen made the remarks on Friday, July 31, during a fundraiser held in Runyenjes, Embu County, questioning why the same region that championed the cause of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua was now withholding support from his successor.

Pointing to the sequence of events that led to Gachagua's impeachment and Kindiki's subsequent appointment, the CS argued that Mt Kenya had no justification for treating the two leaders differently.

He challenged the narrative that Gachagua alone represented the region's political interests, arguing that Kindiki deserved equal loyalty.

The CS dismissed suggestions that Kindiki lacked the credentials to serve as a credible running mate for President William Ruto in 2027, insisting that the Deputy President's only vulnerability lay in the absence of regional solidarity.

Murkomen's intervention comes at a politically charged moment for Kindiki, who has faced a sustained challenge from within the broad-based government.

Several political seers have unsolicitedly advised Ruto to reconsider his running mate choice ahead of the 2027 general election, with some proposing that he instead pick a deputy from either Nyanza or Western Kenya .

The argument advanced by Kindiki's critics is that Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) retains a firm grip over the Mt Kenya vote bloc, making it difficult for Kindiki to deliver the region's support to Ruto's re-election campaign.

Murkomen, however, appeared to reject that assessment outright, suggesting the problem not as a failure of Kindiki's leadership but as a failure of the region to organise behind him with the same energy it once directed at Gachagua.
