MP Kaguchia Blames Dennis Itumbi for His Arrest: "Twisted My Remarks"

Kaguchia said his Saturday rally remarks had been twisted on social media by government-leaning figures to push a particular narrative

The MP said he had no issue presenting himself to the NCIC but had received no official summons before his arrest

Nairobi - Mukurweini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia was arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives on Monday after remarks he made at a political rally on Saturday drew sharp condemnation from government-aligned politicians and sparked a social media storm.

Addressing the press, the MP acknowledged the uproar that followed his weekend rally speech but insisted his words had been deliberately distorted online to serve a political agenda.

He singled out Denis Itumbi and a number of government-leaning MPs from Nyeri and the wider Kenya region as among those who had shared posts he described as misleading.

The MP acknowledged that oversight of such matters falls under the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and said he had received no formal communication from the body.

Kaguchia struck a composed tone as he addressed the prospect of arrest, making clear he had no intention of evading the authorities provided due process was followed.

He added: "If an arrest has to be done, or if in any way I am required by authorities, let this be done under clear circumstances, legally, that is clearly understandable to all, so that if it is going to court, then I can be presented to a court of law. Then I will have my day in court."

Within a short time of his press address, DCI detectives arrived at the Royal Media Services premises and took him into custody.
